Washington Survives Comeback Attempt in 70-69 Win Against Oregon cover image

The Huskies closed out the regular season on a strong note against the Ducks

The Washington Huskies women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season on a strong note with a 70-69 win against the Oregon Ducks on Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore.

The win improved the Huskies' regular season record to 20-9 and 10-8 in Big Ten competition.

The 20 wins marks a new best for head coach Tina Langley during her time with Washington.

However, the game almost had a very different ending for the Huskies and came down to the final seconds.

UW entered the final quarter up 53-47. The Ducks continued to stay within striking distance of the Huskies. The former cut their deficit to single-digits several times in the final 10 minutes.

With 1 minute, 47 seconds left in the game, Oregon finally managed to tie the game 65-65. The Ducks took a 69-67 lead with 21 seconds left in the game.

Washington junior guard Sayvia Sellers hit a layup to knot everything at 69-69 and UW sophomore guard Devin Coppinger got a steal and was fouled and hit the game-clinching free-throw.

The Ducks' brief two-point lead in the final 21 seconds of the game marked their only lead of the contest.

The Huskies went into the second quarter up 15-9 respective 3-pointers from Sellers and Coppinger to end the first.

Washington was able to bolster its advantage to 36-27 going into halftime and led by as much as 13 points in the third before Oregon launched its near-comeback in the fourth.

Sellers scored 16 of her game-high 29 points in the first half. She also had five rebounds, five assists and a steal.

Senior Huskies guard Elle Ladine was the only other double-digit scorer for the team. She scored 11 on 4-for-9 shooting, brought in five rebounds and dished two assists.

Seven-of-eight Washington players to register playing time scored.

Next up for the Huskies will be the Big Ten postseason tournament, which takes place from March 4-8 at the Gainbridge FIeldhouse in Indianapolis.

Washington finished the season eighth in the Big Ten and will play the ninth-ranked Southern California (USC) Trojans at 9 a.m. PT on March 5. The game will air on the Big Ten Network and the FOX Sports app.

Almost all bracketology websites have the Huskies making the NCAA Tournament as an at-large seed, but they could still secure a for-sure spot in the tournament by winning the postseason Big Ten title.

Washington is currently projected by ESPN to be a No. 7 seed in the tournament in the Houston bracket with No. 10-seed Clemson, No. 2-seed Vanderbilt and No. 15-seed Navy.
