Class of 2027 Quarterback Decommits From Washington Huskies

Four-star signal-caller Blake Roskopf became the second UW recruit to decommit from the program in the last week.

The Washington Huskies football team has seen an uptick in their recruiting ability since head coach Jedd Fisch and his staff came over ahead of the 2024 season.

The Huskies were able to land the 12th-best recruiting class in the country in 2026, which was a program-best. That class has already yielded several starters for the team.

The Class of 2027 also looked to be set up nicely, ranked firmly in the Top 25 from several publications. However, that class has taken several hits over the last week.

Four-star wide receiver Dontay Tyson Jr. flipped his commitment from Washington to the Wisconsin Badgers on Oct. 31.

The Huskies' lone quarterback commitment from the Class of '27 also opted to reverse his commitment.

Four-star signal-caller Blake Roskopf decommitted from Washington on Wednesday, marking the second player four-stars or better reverse his intention to head to the Pacific Northwest.

According to an article from Brandon Huffman for Rivals.com, the UCLA Bruins and North Carolina Tar Heels are two teams that are interested in the quarterback.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound quarterback committed to UW in April. The Desert Edge High School (Goodyear, Ariz.) signal-caller joined the class months after his teammate, three-star wide receiver Zerek Sidney, also committed to the team.

Roskopf is ranked as the 169th-best overall player in the class, 14th-best quarterback and fourth-best player in Arizona, per the 247Sports composite.

After Tyson decommitted, UW still had a top 25 class in the country for '27, per 247Sports. With Roskopf choosing not to stay with the team, the program's class ranking has fallen to 28th, per the same website.

What does this mean for UW?

Roskopf was the only commit for the Huskies from the Class of '27 or beyond, meaning that the only quarterbacks currently tied to the team are ones already on the roster.

Washington's quarterback room is comprised of third-years Elijah Brown, Demond Williams Jr., second-years Kini McMillan and Dash Beierly and first-year Derek Zammit.

Williams entered the year as the starter but was embroiled in a quarterback country midseason after going down with an injury and Brown stepped in successfully. Williams has since regained his starting job.

The other three quarterbacks on the roster have yet to attempt a pass in a college game.

Could UW's spending strategy be at play?

The Huskies have been well-reported to have one of, if not the lowest payroll for its football team in the Big Ten.

Fisch has said that the team plans on focusing its limited resources to retaining and continuing to develop the roster.

If that is the plan and the majority of the payroll is being allocated to keep current players on the roster for next season, it could have led the team to lower or rescind it's offers to Tyson or Roskopf, leading to their decommitments.

The roster that has several all-freshman caliber players, including cornerback Jeron Jones, defensive tackle Derek Colman-Brusa and offensive lineman Kodi Greene, all of whom will likely cost a decent amount to retain. Multiple second-year players, such as wide receiver Chris Lawson, will also likely be sought after by teams.
