Mike Hopkins is no longer considering taking the head coaching role with the Saints
The Washington Huskies men's basketball team is still looking for its first NCAA tournament berth since 2019 after finishing with a 16-17 overall record.
This year was head coach Danny Sprinkle's second year leading the program. He improved by three wins from his first season as head coach in 2024-25.
The Huskies declined an invite to the College Basketball Crown tournament, opting instead to fully focus on the offseason in efforts of returning to March Madness.
Sprinkle's predecessor and the last coach to lead Washington to the national tournament, Mike Hopkins, is still looking for his next role.
Hopkins, who coached the Huskies from 2017-2024 and had a 118-106 overall record, was reportedly being considered for the head coaching job with the Siena College Saints.
According to a report on "X" from New York Times and Forbes basketball insider Adam Zagoria, Hopkins is no longer considering the job at Siena.
Hopkins has more than three decades of experience as a head coach at the NCAA and NBA levels.
The San Mateo, Calif., native spent four years as a player with the Syracuse Orange from 1989-93. Two years after his playing days were done, he began his coaching career with Syracuse.
Hopkins served as an assistant for the Orange from 1995-2017. He was the interim head coach for nine games in the 2015-16 season while then-head coach Jim Boeheim was suspended.
Hopkins was hired by Washington ahead of the 2017-18 season. He earned the Pac-12 Coach of the Year award in each of his first two seasons leading the Huskies.
Hopkins' second year at the helm of the program was the team's last NCAA tournament berth. Washington finished that season 27-9 and won the Pac-12 regular season conference championship.
Hopkins was unable to bring the Huskies back to March Madness in his final five seasons in the role and it was announced he wouldn't return to the university March 8, 2024.
Hopkins spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant head coach of the NBA franchise the Phoenix Suns under head coach Mike Budenholzer.
After one season under Budenholzer, Hopkins took a job as an assistant coach and head of player development with the New Orleans Pelicans. He still currently holds that position.
The former Syracuse heir-apparent could opt to return to the NBA ranks if another mid-major or Power Four job doesn't open up. His alma mater, the Orange, hired another former player and assistant — Gerry McNamara — as their new head coach this offseason. McNamara was the head coach at Siena before being hired by Syracuse.
