Jake Browning will be playing with his second team this season and fourth of his professional career.
One of the best quarterbacks in the recent history of the Washington Huskies football program has found a new home.
According to a post on "X" from Ringer and Netflix NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, former Huskies signal-caller Jake Browning has signed a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
This will be the second NFL team Browning has been a part of this year. He signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason to be the backup to starter Baker Mayfield, but lost out on the job to undrafted free agent and former Kansas Jayhawks quarterback Jalon Daniels.
Daniels is currently Tampa Bay's active starter with Mayfield out of action due to a thumb injury.
Browning worked out with the Chargers on Tuesday after the backup to Justin Herbert, former first-round pick Trey Lance, was placed on the injured reserve. With Lance out of action, D.J. Uiagalelei was the only healthy option behind Herbert.
Browning is currently assigned to Los Angeles' practice squad.
The 30-year-old quarterback played with Washington from 2015-18. He was a top 100 player in the Class of 2015 and instantly earned the Huskies starting quarterback job as a true freshman. As a first-year player, he completed 63.1% of his passes for 2,955 yards, 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Browning finished his four-year stint at Washington having completed 64.6% of his throws for 12,296 yards, 94 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. He 271 times for 244 yards and another 16 touchdowns across his four years.
The Folsom, Calif., native's best year as a college quarterback was his sophomore season in 2016. He completed 62.1% of his passes for 3,430 yards, 43 touchdowns and nine interceptions across 14 games and ran for another four scores. He led the Huskies to a Pac-12 title and the program's first appearance in the College Football Playoff under the old four-team format. His senior year in 2018 resulted in a Rose Bowl berth against the Ohio State Buckeyes. He concluded his college career as the winningest quarterback in Pac-12 history.
Browning finished his career with one first-team All-Pac-12 selection (2016) and was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year the same season.
The 30-year-old was an undrafted free agent in the 2019 offseason and spent two years with the Minnesota Vikings. Following that brief stint, he spent five years (2021-25) with the Cincinnati Bengals as the primary backup.
Browning has played in 17 games (started 10) and has completed 68.5% of his passes for 2,707 yards, 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
