The San Antonio Spurs are currently set to play the New York Knicks in the 2026 NBA Finals after taking down the defending NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on Saturday.

The Spurs' entire focus for the first half of June will be on winning the sixth NBA championship in team history and the first since 2014, when Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker were still in their playing days.

After the Finals are done, San Antonio will turn its focus toward the NBA Draft, which takes place from June 23-24 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Spurs will have the 20th overall pick in the draft and they could use that selection to bring in a former Washington Huskies forward.

Hannes Steinbach has been prepping for the draft since the Huskies' season ended in the 2025-26 season.

Steinbach has been considered a fringe-lottery pick by most publications. Most websites have the German big man going in between picks 12-20 in the first round. ESPN's latest mock draft from Jeremy Woo had him going 18th overall to the Charlotte Hornets.

CBS Sports' Cameron Salerno recently put together his own mock draft and had Steinbach going 20th overall to the Spurs.

In Salerno's scouting report on Steinbach, he mentioned how it's not out of the question for the third-team All-Big Ten forward to start for San Antonio and play opposite center Victor Wembanyama, who won the '25-26 Defensive Player of the Year and was named the Western Conference MVP against the Thunder.

Wembanyama also finished second in MVP voting behind Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Steinbach led Washington in scoring and rebounding in his lone season of college ball. He averaged 18.5 points across 30 games (all starts) on 57.7% shooting from the floor (including a 34% mark from 3-point range). He also averaged 11.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.1 steals per game. He led the nation in rebounding per game and tied fellow '25-26 freshman and '26 NBA Draft prospect Cameron Boozer for the most double-doubles in the country (22).

Replacing Steinbach's production next season will be a tall task for the Huskies, as it would be for most programs in the country.

Currently, Washington's roster for the '26-27 season is at 13 players. UW will be hoping 21-year-old Brazilian forward Wini Braga, who possesses a similar skill set to Steinbach, will be able to take replace a large portion of the soon-to-be draftee's production.
