Freshman guard JJ Mandaquit and freshman forward Jasir Rencher underwent procedures Wednesday for respective conditions.

The Washington Huskies men's basketball team suffered arguably its most disappointing loss of the season Wednesday in a 63-60 defeat at the hands of Penn State.

The loss dropped the Huskies to 12-13 on the season and 4-10 in Big Ten competition.

A large reason for Washington's struggles this season has been due to its consistent string of injuries that has seen more than a half-dozen players miss days-to-months of action, respectively.

On the same day the Huskies' fell to the Nittany Lions, two more UW players saw their respective seasons end after undergoing surgery.

Freshman guard J.J. Mandaquit underwent a procedure to fix a foot issue that he's been dealing with off-and-on the entire season and freshman forward Jasir Rencher underwent a procedure for a heart issue that has kept him out of action for two months. Mandaquit's surgery took place in New York, according to UW coach Danny Sprinkle.

"The surgeries both went well," Sprinkle said in a postgame interview Wednesday. "I heard that right before the game."

Mandaquit suffered his foot injury before the season but it improved enough for him to play. He re-aggravated the injury in a Midwest road trip. His last game was against Northwestern on Jan. 31.

In 22 games this season (six starts), Mandaquit averaged 5.2 points per game on 43.6% shooting. He also averaged 3.2 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Rencher didn't receive as much playing time as Mandaquit this season but was seeing an increased workload as the season progressed due to injuries the team suffered.

In eight games this season, Rencher averaged three points per game on 50% shooting and pulled in 1.8 rebounds per game. He registered at least 10 minutes in four of his final five games, the last of which was against San Diego on Dec. 22.

Despite not being starters, the two freshmen were key players off the bench and provided necessary depth for a team that has been starved for it the majority of the season.

Rencher and Mandaquit are two-of-four players currently out for the Huskies. The other two are junior forward Mady Traore, who's out the entire season due to a foot injury, and senior guard Desmond Claude, who stepped away from the team in January due to complications from a lingering ankle injury.

Washington will look to close out the regular season on a strong note and make a potential run in the Big Ten postseason tournament with a thin bench.

The Huskies will next be in action against Minnesota at 6 p.m. PT on Feb. 14 at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.
