Offensive lineman Kodi Greene and defensive lineman Derek Colman-Brusa are living up to lofty expectations despite not yet being allowed to drink
SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies football team is nearing the conclusion of its spring practice schedule. The spring game will take place at 6:30 p.m. PT on May 1 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
When the spring games takes place and the starters take the field — both sides of the trenches will be manned by several familiar and new of the faces.
Two of the new faces will have not even had their high school graduation yet.
When the Huskies inked the 12th-ranked 2026 recruiting class in the country (a program record), there were several players expected to contribute in 2026 as true freshmen.
Among those players were five-star offensive lineman and Kodi Greene and four-star defensive lineman Derek Colman-Brusa.
Greene has been Washington's starting left tackle for the entire spring and Colman-Brusa has been running with the starters, playing on the interior of the defensive line.
"I think it's just the speed of the game," Colman-Brusa said after a practice scrimmage Saturday referencing the adjustment from high school to college. "The speed and size of the game. But (defensive line coach Jason Kaufusi) and (defensive line quality control coach Korey Rush) are doing an unbelievable job getting me there."
Both Colman-Brusa and Greene are local kids. Before transferring to and finishing out high school at Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Greene attended Eastside Catholic High School in Spanaway, Wash. — roughly an hour away from Husky Stadium.
Colman-Brusa attended Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien, Wash. — just to the southwest outside the Seattle city limits.
Both linemen also have siblings who play for UW.
Greene's brother, sophomore cornerback Kayden Greene, is in his second year with the program.
"I feel like, brother being here, home town — (offensive line coach Mike Switzer) he called me every single day, letting me know how much he cares about me and how much it would mean for the whole community for me to be able to come here," Green said Saturday at Husky Stadium. "And I feel like I listened to my gut, I listened to my senses and I feel like Washington was, overall, the best choice for me."
Derek Colman's older brother, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Lowen Colman-Brusa, also plays for the Huskies.
Both the younger Colman-Brusa and Greene have grown close over the offseason.
Beyond sharing similar situations being true freshmen with older siblings on the team and competing against one another on the line, the two have bonded throughou offseason work.
Colman-Brusa (17-years-old) and Green (18-years-old) are weight-lifting partners. Greene has won some lifts and Colman-Brusa has won others.
With the pair's position on their respective lines, they've also learned a lot from UW's 2025 All-Freshman lineman, John Mills.
Mills, like Greene and Colman-Brusa, was tasked with manning the trenches as a true-freshman. He plays left guard, which puts him right next to Greene on the offensive line and face-to-face with Colman-Brusa on several snaps.
Mills has been more than happy to pass on his knowledge to both Colman-Brusa and Greene, whether it be vocal or by example.
Colman-Brusa said that Mills has taken a "big brother" role with him. And when it comes to the matchups between Colman-Brusa and Mills, it's iron sharpens iron.
"(The matchups) are good on good," Colman-Brusa said. "Good on good. It's always good on good. ... I think (my strength is) the one-on-one matchups. I think my ability to use my speed and get those one-on-one matchups."
Colman-Brusa and Greene have the full confidence of the coaching staff and, based on early returns from spring training, it looks like both of them will be more than ready to contribute when the season begins at Washington State on Sept. 5 at Husky Stadium.
Before then, they got to get through graduation and prom.
