For the last 15 years, the Washington Huskies athletic program's men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and women's gymnastics teams have have practiced and competed at what has been known as "Alaska Airlines Arena."
The airline company has had the naming rights to the indoor court and facility inside Hec Ed Pavilion in Seattle. They purchased the naming rights in 2011 after the conclusion of Bank of America's 10-year naming rights agreement.
Washington and Alaska Airlines announced a renewed 10-year naming rights agreement that will keep the indoor facility as "Alaska Airlines Arena" through 2036. Alaska Airlines will also be the "official airline" of the Huskies' athletic programs.
"The University of Washington is proud to deepen our partnership with Alaska Airlines in ways that directly support students, serve our shared community, and help ensure our student-athletes have what they need to succeed in their competitions, classes and lives," Washington president Robert J. Jones said in a news release. "This collaboration creates meaningful opportunities for students, from scholarships and programs to beloved annual events, while also enriching Seattle and demonstrating the power of university-industry partnerships. We look forward to continuing this work together to support students and our city."
According to the news release shared on Washington athletic's official website, part of the annual financial contribution from the airline will also go to support scholarships and community events benefiting student-athletes.
"Seattle is our home, and the University of Washington is one of the great institutions that make this community special," Alaska Airlines vice president of brand and marketing Eric Edge said in the release. "Our role as the university's official airline enables us to support students and student-athletes while celebrating the energy and community that make college athletics so meaningful."
Since acquiring the naming rights of the arena in 2011, several Husky programs have reached various level of successes.
The men's basketball team won regular season conference titles twice and a postseason conference title once and made the NCAA Tournament twice.
The women's basketball team has made the NCAA Tournament four times, the Sweet Sixteen Twice and the Final Four once. One player who helped guide the women's basketball team to its most prosperous period in program history, Kelsey Plum, is a multi-time NCAA champion and had her No. 10 retired since her collegiate playing days.
The women's gymnastics team has won five regular season conference titles and has made it to five AIAW/NCAA regional finals and two AIAW/NCAA tournament semifinals.
"Alaska Airlines and the University of Washington have built a partnership that, for decades, has strengthened our community and expanded opportunities for students, alumni, and the broader Pacific Northwest," UW athletic director Pat Chun said in the release. "Alaska Airlines Arena is a storied venue that has connected generations through unforgettable moments. We are proud to continue this relationship and look forward to the next chapter of impact and growth together."
