University of Washington head football coach Jedd Fisch pushed back against the narrative that he's looking to leave the program at the end of the season on Monday.
Fisch, who is coming up on the end of his second season with the program, has been included as a possible candidate for other major conference jobs. While not all of these schools will have a potential interest in Fisch, jobs are open at Florida, LSU, Auburn, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Virginia Tech and UCLA.
Per Niko Tamurian of KOMO News:
I think, unfortunately, what happens is they just want to tie coaches to lists, and then we have to sit there and defend it rather than just be able to just tell our fans, like 'our players, our coaching staff, myself, my family, we love coaching at the University of Washington.'
And the ridiculousness of people that want to claim that because my wife and daughters are living in Arizona, because I have a 16 year-old who's been in five different schools in the last eight years, to finish her high school has anything to do with my decision, or the ridiculousness of just putting my name on a list just to do it. Only that doesn't affect recruiting, it affects our team, it affects our staff. And my hope is that our players, our coaches, our families understand how much we love it at Washington.
The Huskies are currently 6-3 but are coming off a disappointing loss against unranked Wisconsin on Saturday. They are 3-3 in Big 10 play and will take on Purdue this upcoming Saturday at 4 p.m. PT. They will end the regular season with UCLA and Oregon in consecutive weeks.
In the college ranks, Fisch served as the head coach at the University of Arizona from 2021-23 before getting the Washington gig.
He has also coached at Florida, for the Houston Texas, Baltimore Ravens, Denver Broncos, Minnesota, the Seattle Seahawks, Miami (Fla.), the Jacksonville Jaguars, Michigan, UCLA, the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots.
His last NFL gig was as the quarterbacks coach for the Patriots during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He coached under Bill Belichick and coached Cam Newton, who had taken over for Tom Brady.
Perhaps part of the reason why he's been included in these rumors is because of the constant changeover in his career.
Christian Caple, who covers the Huskies, posted a more thorough transcript from Fisch's interview, which show his thought process and emotions even more on the subject:
