SEATTLE — The Washington Huskies men's basketball team had one of its most disappointing losses of the season Wednesday at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle: an 84-74 loss against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Huskies went into halftime with a seven-point lead after shooting over 70% from both the field (20-for-26) and 3-point range (6-for-8) before slowing down in the second half and ultimately falling to the Hawkeyes.
The loss dropped Washington's record to 12-11 overall this season and 4-8 in Big Ten play and a lot of of the reason for the team's struggles this year has been due to injuries.
The Huskies have had just two players compete in all 23 games this year: sophomore guard Zoom Diallo and senior center Franck Kepnang. Those two players were also the team's only returners from last season.
The injury bug has hit Montlake hard this year and it took another bite out of the Dawgs.
Freshman guard J.J. Mandaquit was on the injured list as questionable for the game against Iowa. He didn't suit up for the game.
Washington coach Danny Sprinkle confirmed in a postgame interview Wednesday that Mandaquit could be out the rest of the year with an unspecified foot injury.
"My heart's broke for that kid," Sprinkle said. " ... He's been playing really well this past month and getting comfortable and he was giving us great minutes. He's about all the right stuff and he's a worker. It's a shame."
Sprinkle said that Mandaquit's ailment originally popped up before the season in September or October. His condition apparently improved but his foot started to swell after the team's game against Illinois on Jan. 29.
In 22 games this season, Mandaquit has averaged 5.2 points per game on 43.6% shooting from the floor. He's also averaged 3.2 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game.
Another name that was listed on the injury report was freshman forward Jasir Rencher. He's missed out the last several games due to unknown reasons. Sprinkle confirmed Wednesday that Rencher is dealing with a heart condition and his status is day-to-day.
"He's not a ways away, we're just waiting," Sprinkle said. " ... Nothing he can do or we can do about it. Which is sad because he was turning the corner, too."
Rencher has averaged three points per game on 50% shooting in eight games this season. He's also recorded 1.8 rebounds per game.
Rencher's last game was in the Huskies' 86-56 win against San Diego on Dec. 22.
