When the transfer portal window took place from Jan. 2-16, the Washington Huskies football team soon found itself with several glaring needs.
The Huskies saw its top two running backs from 2025, Jonah Coleman and Adam Mohammed, both leave the program.
Coleman entered the NFL draft and Mohammed, who was thought to be the heir apparent to the soon-to-be NFL tailback, opted to transfer to Cal.
With the departures, Washington's leading running back going into 2026 at the onset of the portal was Jordan Washington, who rushed for over 200 yards and one touchdown in his true freshman season in '25.
Despite Washington's talent, the Huskies still wanted to add some veteran experience to the running back room.
UW was able to do just that and landed former Oregon running back and Lake Stevens, Wash., native, senior Jayden Limar, in the portal.
Limar joined the program having totals 442 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards and five total touchdowns in his three seasons with the Ducks.
Evidently, the Huskies still kept their eyes on the available veteran running backs and added another vet to their ranks Tuesday.
According to a report from Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, Washington signed Trey Cooley. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound running back will enter his sixth season of college ball. He played two seasons with Louisville, two years at Georgia Tech and another at Troy.
Across his college career, Cooley has ran 215 times for 1,009 yards (4.7 yards a carry) and six touchdowns. He's also caught 33 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns.
Cooley suffered a season-ending injury before the first week of last season and didn't register a snap with Troy.
With Cooley now in the mix, UW's running back room is now comprised of: Washington (sophomore), Quaid Carr (redshirt freshman), Beck Walker (senior), Julian McMahan (redshirt freshman), Ryken Moon (redshirt freshman), Brian Bonner (freshman), Ansu Sanoe (freshman), Limar (senior) and Cooley (senior).
Neither Limar or Cooley has experience being a bell cow running back like Coleman was for Washington, which will likely lead to an spring and summer-long competition for reps in the backfield.
Between the two seniors, Washington and other backs like Bonner (a four-star Class of 2026 recruit), head coach Jedd Fisch and the rest of the coaching staff will have a good balance of experience and talent to choose from.
The Huskies will begin their season in an Apple Cup showdown against Washington State at a to-be-determined time on Sept. 5 at Husky Stadium in Seattle.
