The Cougars know their starting quarterback for the Apple Cup showdown against the Huskies after previously planning on an open competition
Washington and Washington State are set for an in-state showdown in the annual Apple Cup at 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash.
The Huskies will go into the game coming off a bye week after a 2-0 start, comprised of wins against Colorado State and UC Davis.
The Cougars will look to bounce back after a 2-1 start, which has included wins against Idaho and San Diego State and, most recently, a 59-10 loss against North Texas.
Washington has known its starting quarterback for the entire season, including the Apple Cup. Sophomore signal-caller Demond Williams Jr. has completed 69.4% of his passes (34-for-49) for 480 yards and two touchdowns and has rushed 21 times for 132 yards and another touchdown.
Washington State has reportedly been less certain about its starting QB leading into Sept. 20. Sophomore Jaxon Potter was the team's starter through the first three weeks, but struggled against the Mean Green. Potter threw for 139 yards on 23 attempts (16 completions) had no touchdowns and was picked off three times.
Cougars head coach Jimmy Rogers said in a news conference earlier this week that the team would have an open quarterback competition leading to the Apple Cup.
According to a recent report from Spokesman-Review reporter Greg Woods on "X," Washington State decided to reverse that decision and already has a starter determined for Sept. 20. Rogers declined to say whether it would be Potter, senior Zevi Eckhaus or freshman Julian Dugger.
Potter has completed 70.5% of his passes this season (67-for-95) with 604 yards and four touchdowns with his three interceptions this season.
Eckhaus completed 7-for-10 passes for 72 yards against North Texas. In 2024, he completed 74% of his passes (37-for-5) for 424 yards, four touchdowns and two touchdowns. He started for the Cougars in the 2024 Holiday Bowl against Syracuse.
Dugger, who transferred to Washington State from Pittsburgh before this season, went 0-for-3 against the Mean Green. In 2024 while with the Panthers, Dugger went 7-for-13 for 72 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and rushed 21 times for 88 yards and a touchdown.
The two teams are 2-2 in the last four editions of the Apple Cup. The Cougars won 40-13 in 2021 and 24-19 in '24 and The Huskies won in '22 by a score of 51-33 and in '23 with a 24-21 result.
