After No. 1 Purdue got walloped at home by Iowa State, we knew we'd have a new No. 1. The writers went in one direction, the coaches in another. Arizona is atop the Associated Press poll; Michigan is No. 1 in the coaches poll. Here's the complete rankings, and a look at top-25 matchups this week.
It was obvious that we'd have a new leader at the top of the college basketball polls after the former No. 1 — the Purdue Boilermakers — got clobbered at home 81-58 by Iowa State last Saturday.
What's not obvious, though, is who that No. 1 would be. There's no consensus. The writers voted Arizona No. 1 in the Associated Press poll released Monday, but the coaches went with Michigan atop the Week 6 coaches poll.
Purdue, which had won 36 straight nonconference home games, dropped all the way to No. 6 in both polls after the loss. They were just 4-for-18 on three-pointers and made just 6-of-14 free throws. Trailing by four at halftime, they were behind by as many as 27 points in the second half.
“It was an avalanche,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We had way too many turnovers in the second half and more than anything I feel they just stole our spirit. You have to give Iowa State credit they were the reason for our frustration level. They took us to the woodshed.
"Our frustration level got there. You've got to give Iowa State credit there. Our reason for having a high frustration level was them. They were damn good. Their details and their toughness were better than ours. That's an overstatement."
