An abysmal end to Nico Harrison's tenure with the Dallas Mavericks leads them the exciting addition of new Team President Masai Ujiri
The Dallas Mavericks may have finally done something that may just overshadow one of the worst NBA trades of all time. The team is set to hire 2019 Toronto Raptors championship mastermind Masai Ujiri as their next team president.
For more on the hire, Mavs Roundtable writer Nathan Karseno has the latest.
Ujiri is a highly-respected NBA executive, one that led the recent revitalization of the Toronto Raptors franchise, including the club’s 2019 Finals title run.
He spent 12 years with the Raptors franchise before the two sides mutually agreed to part ways following the 2025 season. Ujiri went on to become a part of the WNBA Toronto Tempo ownership group and will now return to the NBA to lead the Mavericks out of what has been a challenging period.
Before the Mavs’ previous President of Basketball Operations Nico Harrison was dismissed, he executed a bombshell trade that sent Dallas star Luka Doncčić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a deal that’s details were hallmarked by Lakers star Anthony Davis being sent to Dallas along with 2029 first-round selection.
The deal was widely considered as a failure for Harrison and the Mavericks and proved to be both a dud and stain on Harrison’s tenure, which ended in November of 2025, 10 months after the landmark trade was agreed upon.
Dallas now matches that bombshell loss with a bombshell acquisition, landing one of the brightest minds in NBA executive leadership to lead the team’s next era. A promising response by a franchise whose games were once overrun with “Fire Nico,” chants less than a year ago.
