The Kansas City Chiefs made a blockbuster trade with the Rams on Wednesday and sent off their former first round pick.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had to make some pretty major financial decisions this offseason and continued their trend of letting top skill talent go rather than ink a long-term deal with them, like they did with cornerback traded L'Jarius Sneed in 2024. The Chiefs traded Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, where he signed a considerable four-year deal. A big question for Kansas City this offseason was what they would do with All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, and they answered that on Wednesday. The Chiefs agreed to a trade with the Los Angeles Rams that sends them their former first-round pick in exchange for a draft haul that includes the No. 29 selection in the 2026 NFL draft. Kansas City will also receive their 2026 fifth- and sixth-round picks and a 2027 third-round pick.

McDuffie is entering his final year on his rookie contract, and rather than sign a long-term deal with the team who drafted him, he’s expected to sign an extension with the Rams, according to ESPN. It addresses a top need for Los Angeles, who has four soon-to-be free agents. It also sends McDuffie back to his hometown, where he’ll look to headline a defense that made it to last year’s NFC Championship game.

McDuffie excelled both in coverage and occasionally as a blitzer out of the nickel role, also playing both roles on the perimeter. He had one interception, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble and one sack in his 2025 campaign.
