The New York Jets are reportedly finalizing a deal to send quarterback Justin Fields elsewhere.
It was pretty much expected that the New York Jets would at least try to move quarterback Justin Fields. For one, he was benched for Tyrod Taylor last season after throwing for 1,259 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, and one interception while recording 383 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
The Jets were his third team after starting his career with the Chicago Bears and later the Pittsburgh Steelers. Then New York traded this offseason for their former starter, Geno Smith, from the Las Vegas Raiders. That pretty much made Fields the odd man out, and he’ll look to continue his NFL career elsewhere.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that – pending a physical – the Jets are finalizing a trade to send Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs.
ESPN reports that other teams showed interest, but that the Chiefs were Fields’ preferred destination. Kansas City is expected to send back a 2027 sixth-round draft pick in exchange for the signal caller. That puts Fields as the backup to star Patrick Mahomes, who is still recovering from a torn ACL that he had surgery on in December. He’ll take over for Gardner Minshew, who backed up Mahomes last season. Minshew signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency.

Fields is certainly not heading to the Chiefs to be their starter, despite still viewing himself as one, but it’s one of the better opportunities in the sport to learn behind a great in Mahomes.
