The Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders suffered potentially major injuries at quarterback in the Week 2 slate.
In Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season, things felt eerily similar to the Week 2 slate in the 2020 season which was eventually deemed “Black Sunday” for the number of season-ending injuries that devastated teams across the league.
While not as dramatic on Sunday, the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders’ seasons may have flipped on their heads depending on the prognoses of quarterback Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, who were both carted off with injuries during their games.
Williams was leading his team to even the score with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter when he took off with the football and seemed to get caught up a bit on the slippery conditions of Soldier Field.
It led to his legs being caught underneath him as he slid to the ground in noticeable pain grabbing at his right hamstring. He was eventually carted off after heading to the medical tent clearly labored being helped by the Bears’ training staff.
While he gave a thumbs up to the crowd, he clearly looked to be in pain. Things were further deflated when Chicago kicker Cairo Santos’ 23-yarder was blocked. It would’ve tied things up. Instead, the Bears went on to lose 9-3.
In his place Tyson Bagent came in and completed 5-of-9 attempts for 54 yards, but it wasn’t enough. It was a far cry from the 59-37 victory for the team in Week 1.
Williams is undergoing testing on his hamstring, which head coach Ben Johnson was slightly optimistic about rather than it being a knee, as it initially looked.
A hamstring injury can be just as devastating with the way it lingers and can pop back up, and how it affects the entire lower body movement.
Then the Commanders suffered a similar fate in a major divisional contest against the Dallas Cowboys.
Daniels was injured on the final play before halftime when he went to receive the snap. He was tripped up a bit by his left guard and tried to catch himself with his left arm when he fell to the ground.
His elbow turned in a bad looking way.
Daniels tried to run off before going down with medical staff taking a look. He was also carted off with a towel on his head like Williams.
Daniels injured his left elbow last season when he dislocated it against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9. It was season-ending.
So, an injury to that same elbow draws a scare after this was looking like a comeback season for the injury-riddled signal caller.
In his place will be veteran Marcus Mariota.
But for both teams, the fate of their seasons is in a standstill until receiving major updates on testing results for their star quarterbacks.
