The generational star sacrificed $51 million in potential earnings to bolster San Antonio’s championship pursuit, prioritizing roster flexibility following a historic NBA Finals run and defensive dominance.
Star forward Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have reportedly struck a deal on a massive five-year extension. However, the contract terms aren’t as massive as they could have been, after team-first efforts from Wembanyama changed the negotiations.
Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, the five-year, $252 million extension could have been a $303 supermax in order to allow San Antonio the financial flexibility to build around him.

While San Antonio ultimately fell short of winning a championship, the future with and now around Wembanyama is bright.

Now that their four-year superstar has taken a team-friendly discount, the Spurs will have even more opportunity ahead as they look to continue building.
In his fourth season, Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points per game, along with 3.1 assists and a lead-leading average of 3.1 blocks.
He was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year and received an All-NBA First Team nod along with his second All-Star selection.
After reaching the Finals in 2025-26, the Spurs now have the leadership, momentum and resources necessary to continue courting talent over the next few seasons as Wembanyama continues to lead the charges in the franchise’s latest competitive era.
