What should 49ers fans take away after week one of college football?

Week one of the college football season has officially wrapped up, and although it’s early, there’s still plenty of takeaways for the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the season beginning, the 2027 NFL Draft is still far away, but it’s never too early to begin scouting and preparing for the massive event, especially now that games are upon us.

Obviously, plenty will change throughout the year. But I'm confident these three takeaways will stay true during the season. So keep them in mind over the next few months.

That said, here are three takeaways for 49ers fans after week one of the college football season.

The 49ers must capitalize on an elite receiver class.

The 2027 NFL Draft receiver class is loaded from top to bottom, as week one made clear. Although Malachi Toney, Jeremiah Smith, and KJ Duff will receive the hype, underrated receivers like Ohio State’s Devin McCuin and Kansas’ Nik McMillan deserve praise for their performances.

It doesn’t matter what round, but the 49ers must grab one of these prospects. Their room is talented, highlighted by veteran Mike Evans, rookie DeZhaun Stribling, and Deebo Samuel. However, injuries have already decimated them, with Ricky Pearsall out for the season and nearly every option banged up. As a result, it’s a questionable unit that must be addressed next April.

This is a deep class. Don’t just look at the blue blood schools.

As always, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and other blue bloods will produce the most NFL-level talent. But contrary to other years, 2027 has an influx of prospects from the Group of Five, or smaller Power Four teams. This means that the 49ers must pay special attention to non-household names, as they could go bargain hunting during the later rounds of the draft.

LSU Offensive tackle Jordan Seaton could be Trent Williams’ successor.

Every 49ers fan knows how important left tackle Trent Williams is to their offensive success. Sadly, the five-time All-Pro is 38-years old and is entering the final years of his career. Because of this, they must find his replacement soon, especially if they want Williams to mentor him.

As of now, new LSU tackle Jordan Seaton is emerging as the top option for Kyle Shanahan. He impressed against Clemson, not allowing any sacks or pressures. The six-foot-five, 311-pound junior pairs elite athleticism with superb technique to dominate opposing edge rushers. If this continues, don’t be surprised to hear his name floating around the bay.
