Should the 49ers consider Lance Heard next offseason?

Kentucky left tackle Lance Heard is the most violent player in college football, dominating defenders with his nasty streak, run-blocking technique, and athleticism. He’s an intriguing 2027 NFL Draft target for the San Francisco 49ers and could be a dream first-round pick in April.

The six-foot-six, 325-pound senior, spent one year at LSU before transferring to Tennessee for the next two seasons. Following a productive 2025 campaign, he moved to Lexington, KY, to join the Wildcats. So far, he’s been a key piece of Will Stein’s offense, allowing only seven pressures and zero sacks, and is solidifying himself as a fringe first-round prospect.

Heard’s A-list trait is his violent nature. He isn’t just paving the way, but trying to flatten and embarrass his matchup. He’s frightening when pulling and consistently pancakes defenders. He’s a stellar athlete, with the speed to become a human wrecking ball and lead block. Kyle Shanahan would love scheming Heard up in creative blocking looks.

This ability is exemplified by his highlight-worthy double pancake against South Carolina, where he flattened his first matchup, then continued upfield and leveled a defensive back. It perfectly encapsulates Heard’s mentality and physicality. This is only one example, but it shows his impact at the next level.

Beyond that, Heard’s run blocking technique is flawless. He has stellar hand usage, consistently reaching the defender’s chest and stopping their momentum. He effortlessly pushes his matchup with his leverage and staggering power. Following his first block, he seamlessly climbs to the second level and finds his next assignment.

Despite impressive stats, Heard’s biggest flaw is his pass protection. He improved vastly in 2026; watch his LSU game, where his athleticism shut down an impressive pass rush. However, he’s not consistent yet and must improve against shiftier, technique-driven rushers. If he can, don’t be shocked to see Heard skyrocket up draft boards.

Kyle Shanahan’s team hasn’t needed a left tackle for seven seasons. However, Trent Williams is 38. They must find his long-term successor soon. Adding him in the 2027 NFL Draft would give the rookie time to mentor under Williams and develop before playing. This is the ideal situation for Heard to develop his pass protection.

Therefore, the 49ers must consider adding Lance Heard to solidify their future offensive line. His dominance as a run blocker, nasty streak, and athleticism make him a high-ceiling prospect. It’s still early, but don’t be surprised to hear Heard’s name floating around in April.
