Some crucial matchups are happening in college football this week.

Not every college football game is built the same. Simply put, some matter more, especially when scouting. Prospects’ performances in signature matchups can be the difference between climbing draft boards and falling off them. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers must watch these uber-important moments.

Not all matchups have to be first-round picks going head-to-head. While some of these are listed below, two under-the-radar players battling oftentimes can be more impactful. Pay attention to these as well.

That said, let’s dive into three matchups the 49ers must watch during week seven of college football.

Carter Smith vs. Kenyatta Jackson Jr.

Indiana left tackle Carter Smith faces Ohio State edge rusher Kenyatta Jackson Jr. in Saturday’s top-five heavyweight bout. I could’ve chosen countless face-offs, but Smith’s experience and Jackson’s dominance make this a marquee matchup.

Smith has four years of starting experience and is the cornerstone of Curt Cignetti’s offense. His reliability, only allowing one sack and four pressures in 2026, makes him an invaluable piece for Indiana.

On the other side, Jackson pairs staggering power, stemming from his six-foot-six, 263-pound frame, with surprising quickness. He’s constantly in the backfield and must wreak havoc on quarterback Josh Hoover to slow down their high-octane offense.

Both prospects will be first-round options for the 49ers in April. This game will be a key evaluation point and will not only decide this game, but also their future NFL landing spot.

DeSean Bishop vs. Alabama run defense

Tennessee running back DeSean Bishop has been ultra-productive for the Volunteers, rushing for 358 yards and four touchdowns the last two weeks. Now, his biggest test approaches as Josh Heupel’s team faces sixth-ranked Alabama.

The Crimson Tide have a formidable, albeit inconsistent run defense. They’ve allowed only 99.8 rushing yards per game, ranking 24th nationally, but surrendered 206 yards in their week six loss to Georgia. They are looking for a bounce-back game against another dangerous rushing attack.

Bishop is an intriguing mid-round option for the 49ers. His speed, power, and vision make him a dynamic back who complements Christian McCaffrey well before eventually taking over. He has an opportunity to skyrocket his stock this week.

Brice Pollock vs. Reed Harris and Omarion Miller

Arizona State has arguably the top national receiving tandem. Boston College transfer Reed Harris has dominated early, leading the team with 34 receptions for 590 yards and seven touchdowns. Colorado transfer Omarion Miller follows close behind with 31 catches for 307 yards and two touchdowns.

Opposite of them sits Texas Tech cornerback Brice Pollock. The six-foot, 195-pound senior is a ball hawk, nabbing eight career interceptions (two in 2026). The star defensive back will play a huge role in shutting down the Sun Devil’s offense.

The 49ers are thin at wide receiver and cornerback. As a result, they will be addressed in the 2027 NFL Draft. A strong performance by any of these prospects will solidify them as an enticing target for John Lynch in April.
