Should the 49ers consider Junior Sherrill during the 2027 NFL Draft?
Vanderbilt wide receiver Junior Sherrill is an electric receiver whose prowess after the catch and burst make him among the top receivers in the nation. He’s an intriguing day-two option for the San Francisco 49ers and could elevate an injury-prone receiver room.
Sherrill is breaking out onto the national radar with 28 receptions for 474 yards and three touchdowns through five games. He’s established himself as the primary threat in the Commodore’s offense and is poised to skyrocket up draft boards come April.
Despite his recent rise to fame, Sherrill’s been an impactful player throughout his career. The senior has spent all four years at Vanderbilt and has tallied at least 20 receptions each season. However, he’s always been outshined by Diego Pavia and the rest of the offense. Now, it’s his turn to take the headlines.
The five-foot-11, 200-pound receiver’s A-list trait is his elusiveness after the catch. Sherrill pairs impressive vertical speed with unparalleled acceleration/deceleration that makes it difficult to corral him. He consistently makes defenders miss and turns five-yard gains into game-changing moments.
Because of this ability, Sherrill is a valuable chess piece for an offense and would thrive in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. He’s excellent in the screen game and is incredibly dangerous in manufactured touches. All a quarterback needs is to hit him over the middle of the field; Sherrill does the rest.
Beyond this, Sherrill is a selfless player who will play any role to win. He has experience as a kick returner and is a surprisingly great perimeter blocker for his size. He doesn’t take plays off and will quickly see the field because of this.
Sherrill’s shown promise as a route runner, but is still raw. He understands how to stem a defender, and his aforementioned burst makes him dangerous; however, he runs a limited route tree and needs to be more efficient during the breaks in his routes. Improving this is the key to establishing himself as an early day-two draft pick in April.
The 49ers must address the receiver room next offseason. They’ve invested significant capital in the unit, drafting 2026 second-round pick De’Zhaun Stribling, 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, and signing Mike Evans to a $42.5 million contract. Still, the unit has been decimated by injuries and can’t be relied upon to stay healthy.
Because of this, the room is questionable and needs reinforcements after the season. It’s still early, but Vanderbilt wide receiver Junior Sherrill is already cementing himself as an enticing option in April.
