There's no better way to begin a new month then with a mock draft.

The San Francisco 49ers have had a hot start to the year, but certain positions are already separating themselves as needs heading into the offseason. In this three-round 2027 NFL Mock Draft, I address those units and find long-term answers for Kyle Shanahan’s squad.

Let’s keep the intro short and dive into the mock draft.

Round One: Trevor Lauck- OT, Iowa

The 49ers must find Trent Williams’ successor next year. Even if the 17-year veteran returns, it’s still wise to address the need and give him time to mentor under Williams. Fortunately for Kyle Shanahan, the 2027 NFL Draft has an intriguing offensive tackle class. Here, they take a shot at Trevor Lauck, the technically sound mauler from Iowa.

The six-foot-five, 314-pound junior excels in pass protection, evident by his zero career sacks and six pressures surrendered. He pairs elite punch timing and accuracy with smooth movement skills that help him mirror and shut down opposing edge rushers.

Lauck has a nasty streak as a run blocker, but he needs to be more consistent. He holds up against most defenders, but struggles to eliminate them from plays completely. His development in this area is the key to establishing himself as a first-round prospect.

Round Two: Ben Roberts- LB, Texas Tech

Ben Roberts is a well-rounded, instinctual prospect who would pair well next to Fred Warner. Currently, Warner carries the 49ers’ linebacker unit; however, he lacks another reliable option. As a result, his injury would derail the defense’s success. The 49ers must find his complement, and Roberts could be a perfect fit.

Roberts' calling card is his superb instincts. He has an uncanny ability to find the ball, frequently leading to turnovers (four interceptions in 2026 and seven forced fumbles in his career). Beyond this, he’s a formidable run defender and thrives at navigating through traffic to reach the backfield unimpeded. Even when engaged with a blocker, his hand usage allows him to shed blocks well.

The main question surrounding Roberts is his man coverage. He’s excellent in zone, but struggles to cover quicker, twitchier tight ends (Oregon game in 2025). This could be exposed in the NFL, where seemingly every tight end is an above-average athlete. Regardless, he can improve this and is still an enticing option for the 49ers.

Round Three: Cooper Barkate- WR, Miami

Cooper Barkate has taken a backseat to Malachi Toney at Miami, with 14 receptions for 143 yards and three touchdowns through four games, but is still a productive receiver worthy of a day-two selection. The six-foot-one, 195-pound redshirt senior is a savvy, refined route runner who understands how to attack a defender’s leverage and create separation.

Barkate isn’t a stellar athlete, but he’s a nuanced prospect who understands how to use tempo and head fakes to make space. He dominates against zone coverage, consistently finding open gaps. Additionally, he has reliable hands and will be a quarterback’s best friend while under duress.

The 49ers have a talented receiver room, but it’s been plagued by injury. Because of this, they should invest capital in the group and ensure that Brock Purdy always has weapons available.
