How did the 49ers do in the draft?
The San Francisco 49ers’ 2026 NFL Draft haul has been widely criticized by the national media because of a few selections. However, analysts passed over some elite picks, especially in the mid-rounds, that deserve some love. Below, I’ve graded each of the 49ers' additions to help shed some light on these.
2:33- De’Zhaun Stribling: B-
While Stribling wouldn’t be my first choice at pick 33, he’s an amazing prospect who will be a day-one contributor for the 49ers. His explosiveness after the catch, reliability, and underrated route running (watch his 2024 tape) make him an ideal fit in Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Stribling has the opportunity to prove the national media wrong and showcase his ability in 2026.
3:70- Romello Height: C+
Height isn’t an every-down contributor, but his prowess rushing the quarterback makes him an impactful designated pass rusher. He pairs a superb first step with a full arsenal of pass rush moves that keep opposing linemen guessing. Height will mesh well on the 49ers' defensive line and be a valuable piece on third downs.
3:90- Kaelon Black: D
Kaelon Black isn’t a bad player; however, he’s a reach in the third round. Running back wasn’t the biggest need for the 49ers. Additionally, there were other enticing options available (Mike Washington Jr. and Emmett Johnson). This pick was questionable at the time and still is now. Regardless of this, Black has the chance to silence the critics and succeed in 2026.
4:107- Gracen Halton: A-
Halton’s explosiveness makes him an ideal selection at pick 107. He needs to get stronger at the point of attack, but he can improve that. For now, his lateral agility and first step will supplement and make it challenging for linemen to reach his chest.
4:127- Carver Willis: D+
Willis is a great athlete, but still needs to work on his power, especially if he’s moving to guard. His mediocre anchor will be exposed against powerful bull-rushers early in his career. He’s not likely to see the field in 2026, but could eventually develop into a solid starter.
4139- Ephesians Prysock: A
Tall cornerbacks were at a premium in the NFL Draft, and the 49ers snagged one of the premier ones. The six-foot-three cornerback has the potential to become a lockdown press corner and excellent instincts in zone coverage. Prysock needs to improve his technique, but could become a star on defense in a few seasons.
4:154- Jaden Dugger: B-
Dugger, a former safety converted to linebacker, was highly productive at Louisiana, earning First Team All-Sun Belt honors. He’s a solid athlete and has a knack for finding the ball. He’s a solid developmental piece who could thrive under the mentorship of Fred Warner.
5:179- Enrique Cruz Jr.: A
Cruz’s film wasn’t perfect; however, why not take a swing at an uber-athletic tackle in round five? He posted a 9.99 RAS score and was among the best athletes in college football. He needs multiple seasons to develop, but could eventually be an impactful piece on the 49ers' offensive line.
