With a pivotal pick at 27, the 49ers weigh trading down for depth or drafting a blue-chip talent to boost their championship window.

The wait is finally over. Today, Thursday, April 23, 2026, the NFL world descends on Pittsburgh for the first round of the draft, and for the San Francisco 49ers, the clock is ticking on a pivotal decision at pick No. 27.

The vibes in Santa Clara changed dramatically on Monday when Trent Williams inked his two-year, $50 million extension. With the Hall of Famer secured through 2027, the "Succession Plan" at left tackle has been downgraded from urgent fire alarm to a manageable concern. This gives John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan the ultimate "wild card" status as the draft kicks off tonight.

The Strategy: Stay Put or Slide Back?

As it stands, the 49ers hold only six picks in this draft. For a team that still needs rotational depth on the defensive line and a long term or honestly even a short term answer at guard, that is a thin hand.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has been vocal this week about the high probability of San Francisco trading out of the first round entirely. "I'm not going to be surprised if the 49ers trade out of this spot," Schefter noted on his podcast. "Like a lot of teams, the 49ers would be open to moving back." By sliding into the early second round, the Niners could turn pick No. 27 into multiple Day 2 assets, allowing them to attack the "meat" of this year’s deep edge rusher and wideout classes.

If They Stay: The "Best Player Available" Options

If the board falls in a way that makes a trade down partner disappear, or if a blue-chip talent slides to 27, the 49ers won't hesitate to pull the trigger. Here are the three most likely names to hear called tonight:

  • Malachi Lawrence, EDGE, UCF: With Bryce Huff retired and the defensive line coming off a league low 20 sack season, Lawrence is the "explosive" answer. He is a bendy, high acceleration rusher who fits the Raheem Morris wide-9 scheme perfectly.
  • Caleb Lomu, OT, Utah: Even with Williams extended, Lynch emphasized that "the end is closer than it has been." Lomu is a high upside athlete who can "redshirt" behind Williams for a season while getting stronger for the NFL.
  • Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami: A favorite of many analysts for his sheer power. He’s a pro ready rusher who can handle the physical nature of the NFC West immediately.

The Verdict

Today isn't just about finding a player, it's about defining the next chapter of the 49ers' championship window. Whether they secure a future star at 27 or flip the pick to stockpile the depth they so desperately need on their roster on Friday, the mission remains the same: get Brock Purdy the help he needs to secure the sixth ring for the 49ers franchise.

The first round begins tonight at 5:00 p.m. PT.
