San Francisco continues to stay aggressive in free agency.
The San Francisco 49ers continued their aggressive overhaul of the wide receiver room by signing veteran pass catcher Christian Kirk to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million, according to reports.
The move marks another calculated addition for a team intent on reshaping its offensive identity heading into the 2026 season.
Kirk, 29, arrives in San Francisco as a seasoned playmaker with a diverse résumé. Originally selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, Kirk has since played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans.
Across eight NFL seasons, he has compiled 432 receptions for 5,415 yards and 30 touchdowns, showcasing both reliability and big-play ability.
While his most recent campaign with the Texans was modest—28 receptions for just under 300 yards and one touchdown in 13 games—Kirk still flashed the speed that once made him a top target.
His standout 2022 season with Jacksonville, where he posted 84 catches for 1,108 yards and eight scores, remains proof of his upside when fully healthy and integrated into an offense.
Durability has been a concern in recent years. Kirk battled a hamstring injury in 2025 and missed time in 2024 due to a fractured collarbone.
A significant groin injury also cut short his 2023 season. Despite those setbacks, the 49ers are betting on his explosiveness and experience to add a new dimension to their offense.
San Francisco’s focus this offseason has been clear: inject speed and versatility into the receiving corps. Kirk joins fellow newcomer Mike Evans, forming a veteran duo that complements a younger group featuring Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing.
With several key departures at the position, including Jauan Jennings and Kendrick Bourne, the 49ers have prioritized reshaping the room with proven talent and field-stretching ability.
Kirk’s role is expected to center around the slot, where his quickness and route-running can create mismatches.
His ability to stretch the field remains a key asset, as evidenced by multiple high-speed plays last season that would have ranked among the fastest for San Francisco ball carriers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is no stranger to Kirk’s capabilities, having seen him produce against the 49ers in previous matchups.
Now, Shanahan will look to maximize those same traits within his own system.
For a 49ers team with championship aspirations, this signing represents a low-risk, high-upside move.
