San Francisco faces a critical roster decision as a painful rib strain threatens to sideline their veteran playmaker, potentially forcing a multi-week stint on injured reserve.
The San Francisco 49ers picked up another important injury during Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals, with wide receiver Mike Evans leaving the game because of a rib strain.
Evans suffered the injury during the contest and did not return. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Evans is dealing with a rib strain and will undergo a full evaluation. Rapoport noted that these injuries can be painful, leaving the 49ers waiting for more information before determining how much time their veteran receiver could miss.
The initial diagnosis is at least somewhat encouraging compared to a more serious rib injury, but the timeline could still keep Evans out for an extended stretch. One 49ers beat writer indicated that rib strains typically take around three to six weeks to recover from, putting Evans in the range of a potential injured reserve candidate.
That distinction is important for San Francisco. Players placed on injured reserve must miss at least four games, meaning the 49ers would have to be confident Evans will need that much time before making the move. With the team already dealing with a significant number of injuries, the decision could come down to how quickly the medical staff believes Evans can return.
San Francisco has already had to navigate injuries at wide receiver this season, making Evans' status particularly important. The 49ers signed the veteran during the offseason to provide Brock Purdy with another proven target, and losing him for multiple weeks would force other players into larger roles.
The timing also makes the situation more complicated. If Evans' injury does fall on the longer end of the projected three-to-six-week timeline, placing him on IR could make sense. If the expectation is closer to the shorter end, however, San Francisco could elect to keep him on the active roster and avoid using one of its limited return designations.
For now, the 49ers will have to wait for the results of Evans' evaluation before knowing exactly what they are dealing with. A three-to-six-week recovery would put his availability for upcoming games in serious doubt, while a shorter timeline could allow San Francisco to avoid an IR stint.
Either way, Evans' rib strain is another injury for the 49ers to monitor closely. The severity of the strain and how Evans responds over the next several days will ultimately determine whether San Francisco is looking at a short absence or a multi-week stint on the sideline.
