With a key receiver off the market, the 49ers brace for potential departure. Jennings' impact could force a significant offensive reshuffle.
Free agency is officially underway, and the wide receiver market has already started to take shape. One of the biggest names available, Alec Pierce, is officially off the board after agreeing to a massive four-year deal to remain with the Indianapolis Colts.
Pierce’s new contract reportedly checks in at four years and $116 million, making it one of the most significant deals handed out to a wide receiver this offseason. The extension removes one of the top pass-catching options from the open market. Pierce was someone several teams were believed to be monitoring, including the San Francisco 49ers.
Heading into free agency, there were reports that San Francisco could explore the receiver market depending on how things unfolded with its own players. Albert Breer previously mentioned the 49ers as a team to watch for Pierce if he had reached the open market.
With Pierce now staying in Indianapolis, attention shifts back to San Francisco’s own free-agent situation which includes most notably, wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
Jennings has become one of the more important pieces of the 49ers’ offense over the past few seasons. Originally selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, he worked his way into a much larger role in recent years thanks to his physical playing style and ability to move the chains in key situations.
Now, Jennings is set to hit free agency at a time when several teams around the league are looking for reliable receivers. During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN insider Adam Schefter suggested that San Francisco may ultimately lose Jennings once the market fully develops.
“Right now we’re waiting on a number of deals. The wide receivers will come into focus,” Schefter said. “Jauan Jennings is out there. It looks like the 49ers will be losing Jauan Jennings.”
If that ends up happening, it would leave San Francisco with a fairly young group of receivers heading into the 2026 season. As things currently stand, the 49ers’ receiver room includes Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins.
While the organization is hopeful that some of those younger players can take steps forward, adding help at the position still seems likely. One name that has been floated as a potential target is Romeo Doubs, who could fit nicely in San Francisco’s offense.
Doubs spent the early part of his career with the Green Bay Packers under head coach Matt LaFleur, meaning he already has experience in an offensive system that shares many similarities with the one run by Kyle Shanahan.
That familiarity could make Doubs a logical option if the 49ers ultimately need to replace Jennings’ role in the offense. For now, though, San Francisco will continue monitoring the market as free agency unfolds and more decisions around the league begin to take shape.
