A devastating ankle injury sidelines the rising rookie for ten weeks, testing San Francisco's depth and placing immense pressure on aging stars to sustain their dominant offensive momentum.

Another San Francisco 49ers wide receiver appears to be out for the majority of the 2026 NFL season. De'Zhaun Stribling is set to miss more than two months after suffering a deltoid sprain in his ankle.

The 49ers are not loving the news, but they have adapted well so far. San Francisco won its season opener against the Los Angeles Rams in dominant fashion, 27-7. Still, some are looking ahead to potential problems that could come from the wide receiver room's lack of depth.

Touchdown Wire's Ariana Pensy discussed what the injury means for the Niners and where they may need to go to find production the rest of the way. Here's some of what Pensy wrote on the topic of Stribling.

"Despite winning their season opener by 20 points, the San Francisco 49ers suffered a significant blow in their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Rookie wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling, a preseason standout for the 49ers, will miss about 10 weeks with a deltoid rupture. ...

If he misses exactly 10 weeks, he will return for San Francisco’s game against the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 22. If it were a little longer, he could come back in time for their December matchup against the New York Giants.

Stribling was expected to play a major role in the 49ers' offense this season. Now, San Francisco will need other receivers, such as Mike Evans and Deebo Samuel, to keep making an impact this season. Both receivers were targeted seven times, had six receptions, and caught a touchdown in the season opener. Running back Christian McCaffrey also played an active role in the receiving game with eight targets and five receptions."

In fairness, it's hard to say that Stribling would have made a huge impact on the Niners this year. We haven't seen him in meaningful games, though we have seen strong glimpses of what he could bring in the preseason.

The issue with the loss of Stribling is that the Niners were counting on him to produce this year. Now with him out, and with aging stars Mike Evans, Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle all having endured injuries not that long ago, the margin for error shrinks.

The Niners are in a good place to contend for the NFC if healthy, but they cannot afford many more injuries. Stribling will hope to be healthy before the stretch run to the playoffs.
