The legacy of one of the most influential assistant coaches in NFL history is set to be recognized on one of football’s biggest stages.
Former San Francisco 49ers offensive line coach Bobb McKittrick has been selected as a recipient of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Award of Excellence as part of the 2026 class in the Assistant Coaches category.
For a franchise synonymous with dominance throughout the 1980s and 1990s, McKittrick’s impact was foundational.
Serving as the 49ers’ offensive line coach for 21 seasons, he played a pivotal role in building the trenches that powered a dynasty.
During his tenure, San Francisco captured five Super Bowl titles: XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX, while also securing 13 NFC West division championships.
His consistency and influence placed him among an elite group, as he remains one of only four coaches to be part of all five Super Bowl-winning teams in franchise history.
McKittrick’s work often flew under the radar compared to the star power of players and head coaches, but his importance was never overlooked within the organization.
Tasked with developing and maintaining one of the league’s most reliable offensive lines, he became known for maximizing talent, regardless of pedigree.
Whether working with high draft picks or unheralded players, McKittrick consistently produced cohesive, disciplined units that were essential to the success of San Francisco’s high-powered offense.
His coaching philosophy emphasized toughness, intelligence, and relentless effort—traits that became trademarks of 49ers offensive linemen during the team’s championship years.
That standard has endured long after his tenure, further cementing his legacy within the organization.
Hall of Fame head coach Bill Walsh, the architect of the 49ers dynasty, once highlighted McKittrick’s invaluable role in the team’s success.
“[McKittrick] was a vital factor in five Super Bowl championships, the evolution of a dynasty and in the production of some of the finest offensive linemen in football,” Walsh said.
In honor of his lasting impact, the 49ers organization established the annual Bobb McKittrick Award, presented to the team’s offensive lineman who best exemplifies dedication, excellence, and commitment.
The Award of Excellence further solidifies his place among the game’s most respected contributors.
McKittrick will be honored alongside fellow assistant coaching legends Ted Cottrell and Mike Westhoff as part of the fifth class of recipients.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place June 24-25 in Canton, Ohio, bringing long-overdue recognition to figures whose work helped shape the game from the sidelines.
For the 49ers and their fan base, McKittrick’s selection is more than just an accolade; it’s a celebration of a coach whose fingerprints remain embedded in one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.
