With Mike Evans sidelined and the depth chart decimated by injuries, San Francisco turns to veteran speedster Brandin Cooks to ignite Brock Purdy’s depleted passing attack.
The San Francisco 49ers’ wide receiver position continues to undergo a complete reshuffle. As star wideout Mike Evans continues to battle a rib injury sustained in Sunday's win over Arizona, his availability for Week 4 against the Denver Broncos looks increasingly doubtful.
In response to the mounting attrition, head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers front office executed a series of roster transactions on Thursday, officially promoting veteran receiver Brandin Cooks to the 53-man active roster while releasing KhaDarel Hodge with an injury settlement.
Brandin Cooks Steps into the Perimeter Void
Cooks, who turned 33 last week, was signed to San Francisco's practice squad just over a week ago following a wave of injuries across the receiving room. With rookies Ricky Pearsall and De’Zhaun Stribling sidelined, Christian Kirk unavailable, and Demarcus Robinson recovering from a high-ankle sprain, San Francisco was left severely short on perimeter targets.
When Hodge, who logged 30 offensive snaps against the Cardinals, suffered a knee injury during practice, San Francisco elected to release him and immediately sign Cooks to the active roster.
Cooks brings a deep wealth of NFL experience to Santa Clara. Sitting just 189 receiving yards shy of the 10,000-career-yard milestone, Cooks appeared in 15 games last season between the New Orleans Saints and Buffalo Bills, recording 24 receptions for 279 yards in the regular season before adding 78 postseason yards.
While Cooks (5'10") lacks the 6'5" frame of Evans, his veteran savvy, route running, and top-end speed offer Brock Purdy a proven option alongside Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing, and Jordan Watkins.
Practice Squad Reinforcements: Malik Turner and Dante Pettis Return
To backfill the practice squad, the 49ers re-signed a familiar face in Malik Turner. Turner has been a mainstay on San Francisco's offseason and practice squad rosters over the past three seasons, making him an ideal candidate for a seamless game-day elevation if depth remains thin.
Turner joins former 2018 second-round pick Dante Pettis, who signed with San Francisco's practice squad on Wednesday. Pettis, who began his career in Santa Clara before stints elsewhere in the league, adds additional familiar depth to the room as the coaching staff scrambles to build a functional receiving corps.
What It Means for Week 4 Against Denver
Unless Evans makes a miraculous recovery, Brock Purdy will head into Sunday's matchup against the Broncos' defense with a makeshift receiving corps. Expect Shanahan to rely heavily on George Kittle down the seam, feature Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield, and utilize Brandin Cooks' speed on intermediate route concepts to stretch the field.
