The 49ers are set to play two games outside of the U.S. in 2026.

The San Francisco 49ers continue to emerge as a strong candidate to play in Mexico City during the 2026 NFL season, with recent reporting and team comments suggesting another international appearance could be announced soon.

Although the league has not formally confirmed the matchup, momentum is building for San Francisco to play a regular-season game south of the border once again.

ESPN reporter John Sutcliffe, who covers the NFL from Mexico, recently stated he can confirm the 49ers will be the team featured at Estadio Banorte next season.

While details such as the opponent and exact date remain unclear, his report adds to growing expectations that the franchise will play a home international game there.

This potential trip would come alongside San Francisco’s already scheduled appearance in Melbourne, Australia, where they will face the Los Angeles Rams in what will be the NFL’s first regular-season game held on Australian soil.

Because the Rams are designated as the home team for that matchup, the 49ers’ participation in Mexico City would likely involve surrendering one of their Levi’s Stadium dates instead.

Team executives have hinted at that possibility for weeks.

CEO Al Guido recently noted it’s “safe to say” the 49ers will be involved in at least one international game in 2026 and confirmed season ticket holders have been alerted that a home contest could be moved overseas.

Owner Jed York has also been candid, saying the team will “most likely” give up a home game and identifying Mexico City as his preferred destination.

The connection between the 49ers and Mexico runs deep. San Francisco holds international marketing rights in the country and consistently draws strong fan support there.

Their last trip to Mexico City came in 2022, when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals in a lopsided performance that showcased both the team’s popularity and the NFL’s ability to generate excitement abroad.

The franchise also made history in 2005 when it participated in the league’s first regular-season international game.

If confirmed, another Mexico City appearance would further cement the 49ers’ role in the NFL’s global growth strategy.

The league has steadily increased the number of overseas games in recent years, targeting established fan bases while exploring new markets.

For now, the Faithful will need to wait for an official announcement from commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL schedule release.

But with multiple signs pointing toward Mexico City, it’s looking increasingly likely the 49ers will once again represent the league on an international stage this time in front of one of their most passionate fan communities.
