San Francisco dodged a season-ending Achilles scare, but a serious ankle sprain leaves the rookie sidelined as the depleted receiving corps pivots to a vital next-man-up strategy.
The San Francisco 49ers won their season opener on Thursday night. They defeated the Los Angeles Rams in stunning fashion, 27-7.
The win, though exciting, came with a difficult loss. 49ers rookie wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling, the team's first selection in the 2026 NFL draft, suffered an injury that could take a while to heal. The uncertainty dealt another blow to the wide receiver room for the season.
After losing fellow wideouts Ricky Pearsall and Christian Kirk to injury, Stribling's loss puts the receiver room thin. One analyst updated how long the team will need to prepare to be without him.
Cole Sullivan of Heavy discussed the latest on injured star wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling. Here's some of what he had to say on the rookie's injury status heading into Week 2.
"While 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed great news after the game that Stribling’s Achilles was intact, which was the fear considering an injury there would have ended his season, the team received a clear timeline for the extent of his injury on Sunday morning.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Stribling will miss at least a month, and he may need surgery on his ankle, although doctors have not yet confirmed that.
Stribling is reportedly still seeking options and a second opinion, but the 49ers will likely place him on IR.
Via Ian Rapoport: '#49ers rookie WR De’Zhaun Stribling, who left the opener early with an injury, is out at least a month with a deltoid sprain in his ankle, sources say. Stribling is still seeking opinions, and while surgery is not currently planned, it is possible. SF will be cautious.'"
Make no mistake, the Niners can manage without Stribling. The trio of wide receiver Mike Evans, tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey had little to no trouble carrying the San Francisco offense to 27 points on the vaunted Rams defense. There's reason to believe they can duplicate that performance.
Still, losing Stribling hurts the 49ers ceiling and shrinks the margin for error with any further injury.
San Francisco is not playing scared. The cautious 49ers are not taking unnecessary risks but they're not wringing their hands over any loss. They have championed the next man up mentality in their approach.
Whether or not Stribling will return in a month, be out longer or require surgery is still up in the air. The Niners will hope he heals smoothly so he can return to the field as soon as possible.
