From a historic kickoff in Melbourne to a primetime clash in Mexico City, San Francisco faces a grueling 38,000-mile odyssey as they chase a sixth Super Bowl title.

The wait is officially over. Following weeks of leaks and international rumors, the San Francisco 49ers have released their full 2026 regular season schedule. While every NFL schedule release brings excitement, this year’s slate is truly historic, featuring two international games on two different continents and a record breaking travel itinerary that will see the team cover over 38,000 miles. From a season opener "Down Under" to a primetime clash in Mexico City, here is a breakdown of the 49ers' road to a potential sixth Super Bowl title.

Starting with a Global Splash

As previously rumored, the 49ers will make NFL history in Week 1 by opening the season in Melbourne, Australia. They take on the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 at 5:35 p.m. PST, a game that will be broadcast globally on Netflix.

The league is clearly banking on the star power of the 49ers to help capture the Australian market. By playing the game on a Thursday (local time), the NFL has granted the Niners a "mini-bye" to recover from the 15,000 mile round trip before their Week 2 home opener against the Miami Dolphins.

Primetime Lights and International Nights

The 49ers remain a darling of the networks, securing several high profile primetime slots:

  • Week 6: Monday Night Football vs. the Washington Commanders (Oct. 19)
  • Week 11: Sunday Night Football vs. the Minnesota Vikings in Mexico City (Nov. 22)
  • Week 15: Thursday Night Football at the Los Angeles Chargers (Dec. 17)
  • Week 17: Sunday Night Football vs. the Philadelphia Eagles (Jan. 3)

The Week 11 matchup in Mexico City at Estadio Banorte is particularly notable. Not only does it mark the Niners' return to a region where they boast a massive fanbase, but it also comes directly after a Week 10 home game against the Dallas Cowboys, setting up a brutal two week stretch of football.

The Critical Mid-Season Stretch

The 49ers will enjoy an early Week 8 Bye, which comes at a perfect time to recuperate from the first two months of the season. Following the break, the schedule intensifies with a Week 10 showdown against Dallas and the aforementioned trip to Mexico City.

The final quarter of the season features a heavy dose of familiar foes. The Niners will face the Seattle Seahawks twice in an eight week span (Week 5 and Week 12) and close out the home slate with a massive Week 17 clash against the Philadelphia Eagles, a rematch of the wild card game earlier this year, and a game that could have major implications for NFC playoff seeding.

The Bottom Line

This schedule is a gauntlet. While the Niners benefit from playing some of their toughest opponents (Cowboys, Eagles, Dolphins) at home, the sheer volume of travel is unprecedented. To win the NFC West for a fourth time in seven years, San Francisco will have to prove they are the world's best…literally.
