The San Francisco 49ers are in the thick of the NFL preseason looking toward a 2026 season that presents plenty of hope. The Niners have high postseason aspirations, and much of them revolve around their starting quarterback, Brock Purdy.
Purdy emerged from the bottom of the league, the last player selected in his draft class, to become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. It came with obstacles.
The San Francisco starter does not shy away from discussing the difficulty of reaching that level. Purdy dropped a blunt take on life in the NFL as an elite player. He shares that talent can only take you so far. Here's some of what he had to say.
“Everybody in the NFL that's a starter, even second-string guys, is the best in the world at what they do. And you can have a great team in college, be surrounded by a great supporting cast. All these SEC schools are great, and recruit great, and win national championships. I'm not knocking them for that, that's awesome. Keep doing that. But when you play in the NFL, you're playing against the best of the best at every position.”
So how do you separate yourself? The talent, everybody’s so talented. You gotta be talented to play. But at the end of the day, it’s coming down to the mental part of the game. Processing quickly, making the right decisions over and over and over.

At the end of the day… you just gotta be more consistent than the guy across from you, and do better longer. They’re going to make great plays… but who can do it the longest mentally, physically, all of it?”
Some players are simply willing to work harder, go further and focus deeper to be successful at their craft. It's that level of mental and physical energy that has propelled Purdy to the top of the league and continued to separate him from players who were once thought to be more talented.
Purdy's comments provide insight into his focused mindset as a player and highlight why we all know he's successful: Work ethic. The Niners' star quarterback will hope to elevate the team to further postseason success when we reach the season's end.
