The 49ers win their first potential award of many for the 2025 NFL season.
Christian McCaffrey’s 2025 season was nothing short of remarkable, and the NFL has taken notice.
The San Francisco 49ers running back was named the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) Comeback Player of the Year on Friday, capping a season that showcased his resilience, skill, and unmatched versatility.
After a 2024 campaign derailed by injuries, an Achilles setback in training camp and a season-ending knee injury in Week 13, McCaffrey returned to full health and full force. He started all 17 games, rushing for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns while catching 102 passes for 924 yards and seven scores.
His 924 receiving yards led all running backs, and his 2,126 total yards from scrimmage were second in the entire NFL. McCaffrey proved he can dominate both on the ground and through the air, a dual-threat that few in league history have matched.
McCaffrey’s resurgence coincided with a resurgent 49ers team. San Francisco rebounded from a disappointing 6-11 2024 season to finish 12-5 in 2025, climbing to third place in the NFC West.
The team also notched a playoff victory, defeating the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round before falling to the top-seeded Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round.
McCaffrey’s consistency and explosiveness were pivotal to the team’s dramatic turnaround.
The PFWA Comeback Player of the Year honor puts McCaffrey in exclusive company. He is just the third 49ers player to win the award, joining Garrison Hearst (2001) and Bryant Young (1999).
His season also earned him Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors, and he has been named a finalist for AP NFL MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year.
Only two other players, Adrian Peterson in 2012 and Joe Burrow in 2024, have achieved all three nominations in a single season, highlighting how exceptional McCaffrey’s campaign truly was.
At just nine seasons into his NFL career, McCaffrey has shown he can overcome adversity and redefine what it means to be a premier playmaker.
His ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game makes him a cornerstone for the 49ers’ offense and a nightmare for defenses.
After proving he can rebound from serious injuries and perform at an elite level, McCaffrey has not only earned a prestigious personal award but has also reinforced his status as one of the league’s most complete and dynamic players.
