Do the San Francisco 49ers Have an Injury Problem?

After a season decimated by star-player absences, the 49ers front office is scrutinizing training protocols and field surfaces to transform a recurring nightmare into a competitive edge.

Control what you can control. It's a sentiment coaches across the country are repeating in some way or another.

The implication is, it's much more productive to fix the things one can control than to fixate on things that simply are not going to change.

The San Francisco 49ers are trying to figure out in which category their 2025 injury problem fits. If it is something the team can control, mitigating injury should top the list of priorities for the team this offseason.

To be clear, injuries decimated the 49ers' roster. The team, well aware of that fact, spent the next few months after the conclusion of the season looking into potential causes of injury and solutions.

In January, the 49ers' general manager John Lynch addressed the injury problem. Here's what he had to say about it back then.

“Yeah, we’re always looking into trends, data, everything we do. The health and performance of our players is at the utmost priority each and every year. You know, this year it was tough and it took a toll on our team. We’ll continue to look. Now, having said that, we’ve spent a lot of time and effort in recruiting really quality people, and I think being at the forefront of injury prevention. I think this year probably because the star players that went down there was a lot of attention given on that. The fact of the matter is injuries are a part of this game. And so, what we strive to do is never to eliminate injuries, but to mitigate injuries, and I think we have a lot of good processes. We’ll challenge them all. That process has begun. It never frankly stopped, but yes, we’ll look at everything and we’ll examine everything.”

In the world of athletic training and physical therapy, professionals tend to take ownership of their role in injury prevention. Sometimes they take more blame than is warranted. Still, there are precautions to take in preventing injury and that will be the case for the 49ers' training staff as it is every year.

This offseason, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has been vocal about the positive effect that moving from artificial turf to grass would bring. And while it would require more upkeep it's something the franchise may consider if injuries persist.

The 49ers had an injury problem in the 2025 season. They will hope to have a solution by the time the season kicks off in Week 1.
