Fueling a dominant revenge performance, the 49ers linebacker confronts his former coach over a cold-hearted release, turning a gritty victory into a deeply personal statement of defiance.
The San Francisco 49ers kept their perfect season intact on Sunday with a hard-fought 24-14 victory over the Denver Broncos. But while the team celebrated moving to 4-0, no one on the field played with more raw emotion or carried a bigger chip on his shoulder than linebacker Dre Greenlaw.
Facing the team that cut him after an injury-plagued 2025 campaign, the 29-year-old put on a defensive clinic, racking up a team-high 12 tackles (seven solo) and forcing a crucial fumble. However, it was his fiery exchanges with Broncos head coach Sean Payton that stole the postgame spotlight.
A Postgame Confrontation Months in the Making
Tensions flared immediately after the final whistle at Levi's Stadium. Viral video captured Greenlaw heading directly toward Payton at midfield, shouting heated words at his former head coach until teammate Fred Warner stepped in to separate them and usher Greenlaw back toward the locker room.
The hostility wasn't confined to the final whistle, either. Earlier in the contest, following a stop near Denver's sideline, Greenlaw turned toward Payton and pointed directly at him.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Greenlaw held nothing back when asked what he voiced to Payton in those postgame moments.
"I told him to get the f*** off the field," Greenlaw admitted, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "That's it: 'Get the f*** off the field.'"
"The Disrespect": Why the Matchup Was Personal
While Greenlaw stressed that he harbors nothing but love and respect for his former Broncos teammates, his grudge against Payton stems from how his exit was handled in Denver.
After signing a three-year, $35 million contract with the Broncos ahead of the 2025 season, Greenlaw's tenure was derailed by quad and hamstring injuries, limiting him to just eight games. According to Greenlaw, as he worked his way through rehab, Payton began giving him the cold shoulder.
"He would walk by—I would walk by—and he wouldn't even look at me because of my injury," Greenlaw revealed. "So I just knew what it was with him there."
The breaking point arrived when Denver released him in March. Rather than hearing the decision directly from the head coach, Greenlaw learned he was being cut through his agent, a move the linebacker labeled deeply disrespectful.
"He couldn't be man-to-man and call my phone and say, 'We're going to cut you,'" Greenlaw noted.
Payton Takes the High Road
Despite Greenlaw's animated antics on the field and at the postgame handshake, Payton took a complimentary approach when asked about the altercation during his press conference.
"I said this to Kyle [Shanahan] afterwards: I think the world of him," Payton said. "Really love everything about him. He plays with that emotion, so all good."
Back Home and Thriving in Santa Clara
Since returning to San Francisco on a one-year deal, Greenlaw has re-established himself as an emotional heartbeat of Raheem Morris' defense. On Sunday, that passion translated into a game defining performance that helped keep the 49ers undefeated while delivering a satisfying sense of personal closure.
