The San Francisco 49ers continued to add depth along the offensive line late Tuesday night, agreeing to a one-year deal with veteran lineman Brett Toth.
The move comes as the 49ers navigate free agency during the NFL’s legal tampering period, focusing on strengthening depth in the trenches ahead of the 2026 season.
Toth, 29, originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Army football in 2019 when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Although he was waived during his rookie preseason, he was quickly claimed by the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the 2019 season before eventually returning to Philadelphia in 2020.
Since then, Toth has had multiple stints with the Eagles while also spending a brief period with the Carolina Panthers in 2023.
During the 2025 season, Toth appeared in all 17 games for Philadelphia and made four starts, seeing time at both guard and center. He logged 363 offensive snaps and earned a 73.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus while allowing just two sacks and committing two penalties.
Over the course of his NFL career, Toth has appeared in 37 games with six starts. While he originally entered the league as an offensive tackle, the 6’0, 305 pound lineman is better suited for interior offensive line play in the NFL. His versatility has allowed him to transition across the interior offensive line, giving teams flexibility at guard and center.
That versatility could be valuable for San Francisco as the team continues to evaluate its offensive line depth. Several linemen, including Spencer Burford, Ben Bartch and Matt Hennessy, could depart in free agency, which may open up competition along the interior of the line.
If those moves materialize, Toth could find himself competing for snaps at left guard or serving as a key depth piece capable of filling multiple roles along the offensive front.
While the signing may not grab major headlines, it represents another step in the 49ers’ effort to reinforce the offensive line heading into the 2026 season. Football games are won and lost in the trenches and the 49ers have done well in free agency so far fortifying them.
