Returning from a grueling injury, the All-Pro linebacker anchored a dominant defensive showcase in Australia, silencing the Rams and proving he remains the Niners' definitive championship X-factor.

The San Francisco 49ers went on the road for their first game of the season. Although to be precise, 49ers fans could not drive where they went to play their first game.

The Niners defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Australia, 27-7. The dominant win caught most by surprise after the Rams received so much offseason buzz for their Super Bowl ceiling.

Much was made of the quiet night Myles Garrett had in his first game as edge rusher for the Rams against the 49ers. That said, it was the San Francisco defense that made the most on the field noise in this game.

Julian Ojeda of Clutch Points noted the emergence of San Francisco linebacker Fred Warner. Here's some of what he had to say of Warner's return to the Niners lineup in Week 1.

"Warner appeared in just six games last season after suffering a fractured and dislocated right ankle. He recorded 51 tackles, two tackles for loss, three passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery before the injury ended his regular season.

The shortened campaign marked a dramatic change for one of the NFL’s most consistent linebackers. Before 2025, Warner had never finished a full season with fewer than 118 tackles since San Francisco selected him in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Warner’s Week 1 performance offered an immediate reminder of what the 49ers missed during his absence. Beyond his 11 tackles, his forced fumble increased his career total to 18 and helped San Francisco control the Rams throughout the season opener.

His ability to cover ground, create turnovers and anchor the middle of the defense makes him an X-factor capable of changing the ceiling of San Francisco’s unit. After losing most of last season to injury, Warner’s return already looks significant for a 49ers team with postseason aspirations."

The Niners were not in need of a dramatic improvement this season, but they appear to have made on in the early going. Linebacker Fred Warner appears to be a huge part of it.

It is difficult to put season opening wins into perspective. Often teams' Week 1 performance is a one-off. Add in that the game was in Australia and the preparation was unlike any NFL game either team will play this year.

Still, the win indicated that Warner and company, at least for now, adapt better to change than the Rams do.

The Niners will hope to continue positive momentum heading out of the Week 1 victory.
