Is a 49er and Deebo Samuel reunion coming this offseason?

The possibility of a Deebo Samuel return to San Francisco is already creating buzz ahead of the 2026 NFL season, and two of the 49ers’ biggest offensive stars appear fully on board with the idea.

Tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey both recently voiced strong support for a reunion with the former All-Pro wide receiver as he prepares to enter free agency.

Kittle first fueled speculation during a Super Bowl week appearance with Sports Illustrated, hinting that San Francisco could look to bring back familiar talent to strengthen its receiving corps.

Reflecting on the team’s recent success, Kittle struck an optimistic tone about the direction of the roster.

He later revealed he had recently spent time with Samuel, making it clear there’s still a strong bond between the two former teammates.

Having shared the field for six seasons, Kittle witnessed firsthand how Samuel’s versatility transformed Kyle Shanahan’s offense.

At his peak, Samuel was one of the league’s most unique weapons, capable of lining up at receiver, in the backfield, or anywhere in between.

Samuel was traded to the Washington Commanders prior to the 2025 season and is now headed for unrestricted free agency after not signing a long-term extension.

While his production has dipped slightly compared to his First-Team All-Pro campaign in 2021, when he totaled 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns.

He still produced 802 yards from scrimmage and six scores last season despite playing on a struggling Washington squad.

McCaffrey, who joined the 49ers after Samuel had already become an established star in San Francisco, also praised his former teammate during Super Bowl media appearances.

The veteran running back emphasized Samuel’s impact not just statistically but emotionally, describing him as a tone-setter whose physical playing style energizes the entire offense.

San Francisco’s current receiver situation makes a reunion even more compelling.

Jauan Jennings is approaching free agency, Brandon Aiyuk could be released, and young receiver Ricky Pearsall has battled injuries early in his career.

Adding a familiar face who already understands Shanahan’s complex system could help stabilize the group while the team looks for additional long-term solutions.

A Samuel return wouldn’t necessarily mean a return to his previous every-down workload, but as a complementary weapon alongside McCaffrey, Kittle, and the rest of the offense, he could still provide significant value.

His experience, physicality, and versatility remain traits the 49ers covet.

Whether a deal ultimately materializes remains to be seen, but if Kittle and McCaffrey have their way, the door for a Deebo Samuel homecoming in 2026 is clearly wide open.
