49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk will miss two to three weeks with a knee injury. Kyle Shanahan explains what his absence means for the offense.

The San Francisco 49ers will be without fullback Kyle Juszczyk for the next two to three weeks, and head coach Kyle Shanahan made clear this week that the loss carries significant weight for one of the league’s most intricate offenses.

Juszczyk underwent an MRI on his knee that revealed a sprain and a bone bruise. He will miss Sunday’s Week 5 game against the Seattle Seahawks, as the 49ers look to extend their unbeaten start to the 2026 season.

Appearing on KNBR with Adam Copeland and Derek Papa, Shanahan acknowledged that the organization has likely come to take Juszczyk’s contributions for granted.

The coach attributed that to the fullback’s longevity and durability, noting that his consistent availability over the years has made his value easy to overlook.

Juszczyk joined the 49ers in 2017, the same year Shanahan took over as head coach, and has served as a cornerstone of the offense throughout the coach’s tenure.

Shanahan emphasized the volume of responsibility the 49ers place on Juszczyk each week.

He said the fullback has never been overwhelmed by his workload and requires relatively little preparation from the coaching staff to master new material.

Shanahan also pointed to the extensive pre-snap motion San Francisco builds into its game plans, noting that few teams ask as much of a fullback in that area and that Juszczyk executes it with ease.

“Not having Juice is a big deal,” Shanahan said.

The comment reflects how central Juszczyk is to the structure of the 49ers’ attack. Shanahan’s system relies heavily on motions, shifts, and varied alignments to manipulate defenses before the snap.

Juszczyk’s ability to operate from the backfield, the slot, or out wide, while still serving as a lead blocker in the run game, allows the 49ers to deploy the full scope of their playbook without tipping their intentions.

While his value is measured primarily in blocking and execution, Juszczyk has also contributed as a receiver.

In Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Brock Purdy connected with him on a 6-yard touchdown pass.

His absence comes at a difficult point on the schedule. Seattle’s defense has consistently presented challenges for Shanahan’s offense, and the 49ers will now need to adjust their personnel packages to account for the loss of a player whose skill set has no direct equivalent on the roster.

The 49ers have the depth to manage a short-term absence. Over the long term, however, Juszczyk’s return will be an important factor as the team pursues its Super Bowl aspirations.
