Can the 49ers make a move for veteran receiver Mike Evans this offseason?

Set to hit free agency after 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mike Evans is widely viewed as the top receiver available, and with a need for more weapons in the San Francisco 49ers locker room, the veteran pass catcher may be a perfect target.

Bleacher Report analyst Alex Ballentine recently labeled the 49ers as the “perfect” landing spot, citing their championship aspirations and glaring need for proven pass-catching help.

“If Evans is going to leave Tampa Bay, it will be for a contender,” Ballentine wrote, noting that San Francisco fits that description, assuming the team can stay healthy.

That qualifier has defined the 49ers’ recent seasons. Injuries to cornerstone players such as George Kittle and others have repeatedly disrupted promising campaigns.

Adding Evans would give head coach Kyle Shanahan a dependable, battle-tested weapon who thrives in critical moments.

At 6-foot-5 and over 230 pounds, Evans remains a nightmare matchup on the outside.

Before a broken clavicle limited him to just eight games in 2025, he had opened his career with 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons, an NFL record to begin a career.

Across 12 seasons, he has compiled more than 13,000 receiving yards and 108 touchdowns, numbers that place him firmly in future Hall of Fame conversations.

For quarterback Brock Purdy, the addition would be massive. With uncertainty surrounding the 49ers’ receiver depth chart and potential departures in free agency, Evans would instantly become the most accomplished wideout on the roster.

His red-zone dominance could be especially valuable early in the season as Kittle works his way back to full strength.

Beyond the stat sheet, Evans brings consistency, something San Francisco desperately needs.

He’s never been defined by flash but by production, year after year. He blocks willingly in the run game, wins contested catches, and understands how to perform on the postseason stage.

The 49ers still have other roster needs to address, and durability will be a key factor in any pursuit, but if the front office believes Evans is fully healthy, the fit makes too much sense to ignore.

San Francisco has hovered on the brink of another Lombardi Trophy.

A move for Evans wouldn’t just add depth; it would signal that the 49ers are pushing all their chips to the center of the table in pursuit of a championship within the next few seasons.
