Can Ricky Pearsall finally justify his first-round draft pick? 2026 demands a breakout performance as he enters a pivotal contract year.

The San Francisco 49ers are in need of a stronger receiving corps than they had last season. They understand as much and addressed their need with star wide receiver Mike Evans in free agency.

The Niners want Evans to pan out, but they also hope for receivers from their 2025 squad to reach potential as well. One of those players is Ricky Pearsall.

Pearsall, the once highly drafted wide receiver out of Florida, has not lived up to the hype early in his NFL career. The talented player has had his bouts with injury, but that has not been the only limiting factor so far.

One Niners analyst believes it is time for Pearsall to prove worthy of his draft selection and break out in 2026. Jose Sanchez discussed why the San Francisco player might be one of the three 49ers facing the most pressure this year.

"Will 2026 be a primetime year for Ricky Pearsall? It’s time for him to finally prove to the 49ers why they drafted him in the first round.

He hasn’t given them any justification for it thus far. Last year, it looked like there would be a chance for it. He started the season strong until he injured his PCL against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Once that happened, he was never the same again. Not only did he miss numerous games, but he wasn’t anywhere close to 100% in any game after that. It was unfortunate and disappointing to see.

2026 has to be the year that he breaks out and finally finds some luck with his health. Pearsall will essentially be entering a contract year. This next season will determine if the 49ers will pick up his fifth-year option or not."

Many believed the Niners wide receiver was over-drafted when San Francisco took him in the first round. The 49ers have fared well with receivers with unconventional talent, but Pearsall has not done as well as receivers like Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk did with the team early in their respective careers.

Whether or not Pearsall pans out probably will not affect the Niners too much in either way. San Francisco is likely going to have a good offense regardless of what the former first round receiver does. So, while the team wants to hit with every first round pick it makes, the pressure is on Pearsall to break through in 2026. We'll see if he can in the pivotal season ahead.
