The Vikings snatched up Jauan Jennings on a $13 million deal, but a critical timing technicality leaves San Francisco empty-handed despite losing their veteran wideout to Minnesota.
NFL wide receiver Jauan Jennings is no longer a San Francisco 49er. In fact, he already has a new team. On Tuesday, Jennings agreed to a one-year, $13 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings.
The move improves the Vikings, who really only have two proven wide receivers on their roster. It doesn't hurt the Niners much after their free agent and draft acquisitions.
The 49ers added three impact receivers this offseason. The team signed Mike Evans and Christian Kirk before drafting Ole Miss wide receiver De'Zhaun Stribling. While returning Niners receiver Ricky Pearsall will have a say in the position battle, the three players could come in and fill the top three receiver spots right away.
Where the loss of Jennings could hurt the team is the hope that they might get a compensatory draft pick for the player that they lost. According to David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone, San Francisco will not be given a compensatory draft pick. Here's what Bonilla had to say about the news.
"The San Francisco 49ers will not receive a compensatory pick for wide receiver Jauan Jennings after his reported one-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Minnesota Vikings. The reason is simple: Jennings signed after the 2026 NFL Draft, making him ineligible to factor into the NFL's compensatory pick formula.
NFL compensatory picks are extra draft selections awarded to teams that lose more—or more valuable—free agents than they sign during the offseason. The NFL's formula takes several factors into account, including a player's salary, playing time, and postseason accolades.
However, only unrestricted free agents who sign with new teams before the NFL Draft are included in the compensatory pick calculations. Because Jennings remained unsigned until after the draft concluded, his departure will not factor into the 49ers' future compensatory selections."
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings (15) celebrates his touchdown pass with quarterback Brock Purdy (13) during the fourth quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Wild Card Round. Eric Hartline-Imagn ImagesJennings is replaceable. In fact, over the last three seasons combined he's been less productive than Vikings receiver Jordan Addison despite Addison catching passes from J.J. McCarthy last season. Albeit Minnesota needed a receiver bad enough to make the move to add Jennings for up to $13 million this year.
The clear takeaway is the Niners can move on from the former San Francisco receiver. The Jennings news is over for now for the 49ers. They have the receiver to move on from his production. Now, the Niners will have the next opportunity to make a move in free agency.
