Niners defensive end Keion White recovers after a post-Super Bowl shooting incident. He underwent surgery for a non-life-threatening ankle wound.
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Keion White is recovering after being shot early Monday morning in San Francisco, just hours after the conclusion of Super Bowl LX.
The 49ers confirmed that White sustained a non life threatening gunshot wound to his ankle and underwent successful surgery at a local hospital.
“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” the team said in a statement Monday afternoon. “He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”
According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 4:06 a.m. PT at a business located on the 1700 block of Mission Street in the Mission District. Upon arrival, officers found White suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Aid was rendered on scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital.
SFPD said a preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside the establishment before shots were fired by an unknown suspect. No arrests have been made, and the department’s Strategic Investigations Unit is handling the case.
“Our officers are working diligently on this investigation, and we’re following multiple leads,” said Evan Sernoffsky, SFPD’s director of strategic communications.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the incident Monday, expressing concern and support for the 49ers defensive lineman.
“Any violent incident in our city is unacceptable, and I’m hoping Keion recovers quickly,” Lurie wrote on social media. “I’ve spoken with SFPD and 49ers leadership—we are all grateful to our SFPD officers for their quick response.”
White, 27, was acquired by the 49ers in a midseason trade from the New England Patriots during the 2025 campaign. A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, White appeared in 11 games for San Francisco, including both NFC playoff contests. He finished the regular season with 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks in nine games with the 49ers, providing much-needed depth along a depleted defensive front.
The team has not placed a timetable on White’s recovery.
The incident marks the second time in less than two years that a 49ers player has been shot in San Francisco. In August 2024, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in Union Square. Pearsall made a full recovery and returned to play later that season.
