San Francisco 49ers Star Fred Warner Earns NFL’s Top PFF Grade cover image

Despite an injury-riddled season, Fred Warner is still recognized as the top of his position by PFF.

The San Francisco 49ers entered last postseason holding out hope that their defensive heartbeat would make a dramatic return.

Fred Warner suffered a dislocated and fractured right ankle in October, an injury that abruptly ended his 2025 campaign after just six games.

While fans never got to see the All-Pro linebacker attempt a comeback in the NFC Championship Game, the mere discussion of a potential return underscored both his toughness and importance to the franchise.

Now, with Warner expected to be fully healthy for offseason workouts and training camp, there’s renewed optimism in Santa Clara, and remarkably, even in an abbreviated season, Warner still managed to separate himself from every other linebacker in football.

According to Pro Football Focus, Warner finished the 2025 season as the highest-graded linebacker in the NFL, posting a career-best 93.2 overall defensive grade.

In just six games, he delivered elite production across the board, earning a 91.3 run-defense grade, a 91.5 coverage grade, and a 74.4 tackling grade.

No other linebacker eclipsed the 90.0 mark in both run defense and coverage.

“Even amid an already acclaimed career, Warner continues to build upon his monolithic profile,” analyst Mason Cameron wrote. “Before suffering a dislocated ankle in Week 6, the 49ers captain was playing well above even his own elite standard.”

The numbers back that up. Warner recorded 51 tackles, two forced fumbles, and three passes defensed in his six appearances.

Projected over a full 17-game slate, he was on pace for well over 140 tackles,  production that would have placed him among the league leaders once again.

For a 49ers defense that battled inconsistency throughout 2025, Warner’s absence was glaring.

His ability to diagnose plays pre-snap, erase tight ends in coverage, and close gaps in the run game makes him one of the most complete off-ball linebackers in the modern NFL.

His presence isn’t just about statistics; it’s about alignment, communication, and setting a physical tone.

The silver lining for San Francisco is that Warner’s dominant start suggests his peak is far from over.

If anything, the injury-shortened season highlighted just how indispensable he is.

A fully healthy Warner returning to anchor the defense could be the single most impactful development of the 49ers’ offseason, and a major reason why expectations will once again be sky-high in 2026.
