The San Francisco 49ers have been looking for unique ways to upgrade their roster this offseason, both through trades and free agency. On Wednesday afternoon, a big move made a splash around the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly traded for Dallas Cowboys standout defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, who just signed a four-year, $80 million extension in Dallas last offseason.
Because of several moves the Cowboys made late last season and into this offseason, defensive tackle became a position where Dallas had some redundancy. As a result, Odighizuwa had been floated in trade talks recently, including in a potential Maxx Crosby deal that reportedly got close before the Baltimore Ravens ultimately stepped in and signed Crosby instead, though even that deal fell through later.
After the Crosby deal didn’t materialize earlier this week, Odighizuwa remained a player the Cowboys were willing to move. Dallas will reportedly receive a third-round pick from the 49ers in the upcoming 2026 draft.
Given the impact he will bring to SF immediately, this is a clear win-now move. While quality starting talent can be found in the third round, Odighizuwa is a known commodity that will undoubtedly produce.
The 49ers take advantage of a team with a surplus at defensive tackle and land a standout player who immediately becomes one of San Francisco’s most impactful defensive pieces. Odighizuwa still has room to grow as a player, which could make this move even more valuable for the 49ers moving forward.
