The narrative surrounding the San Francisco 49ers often centers on an aging roster and an uncertain future, yet national recognition suggests the team’s foundation remains firmly intact.
That point was emphasized when Sports Illustrated’s Gilberto Manzano released his projected list of the top 100 NFL players for the 2026 season, a ranking that included four core pieces from Kyle Shanahan’s squad.
Even after a season riddled with injuries and roster turnover, the 49ers still placed multiple stars among the league’s elite, reinforcing the idea that high-end talent, not just youth, will keep San Francisco competitive moving forward.
Offensive tackle Trent Williams earned the highest ranking of the group at No. 23. At 37, Williams continues to defy the typical aging curve for linemen, serving as the stabilizing force on an offense that endured constant reshuffling.
Manzano highlighted Williams’ elite level of play and his value as Brock Purdy’s primary protector, noting that San Francisco’s offense continued to produce despite widespread injuries. Williams’ résumé already includes five All-Pro selections, and his sustained dominance remains critical to Shanahan’s system.
Linebacker Fred Warner followed at No. 29, a nod to both his on-field production and leadership. Warner missed time late in the season due to an ankle injury, but Manzano pointed out that his availability late in the year suggests he should be fully healthy well before training camp.
Prior to the injury, Warner was performing at an elite level, anchoring a young and depleted defense after Nick Bosa went down early. His instincts, communication, and physicality continue to define the 49ers’ defensive identity.
Running back Christian McCaffrey landed at No. 38 after delivering another standout season. Following an injury-plagued 2024, McCaffrey returned to form by playing every game and producing 2,126 all-purpose yards with 17 total touchdowns.
Manzano emphasized McCaffrey’s versatility and consistency, noting that he showed no signs of decline even in his ninth NFL season. His ability to impact games as both a runner and receiver remains central to San Francisco’s offensive success.
Rounding out the list was edge rusher Nick Bosa at No. 45. While his 2025 season was cut short by a knee injury, Manzano referenced Bosa’s past recovery from a similar setback earlier in his career.
Though he’s approaching his age-29 season, Bosa’s explosiveness and relentless motor still make him one of the league’s most disruptive defenders when healthy.
With four players recognized among the NFL’s top 100, the 49ers’ presence on the list serves as a reminder that their championship window may be evolving, but it is far from closed.
