The trade market for Vikings WR Jauan Jennings is heating up, and an injury-riddled 49ers receiver room could make a homecoming the most sensible fit.

It took only five months for Jauan Jennings’ fresh start in Minnesota to begin looking more like a detour, and the San Francisco 49ers suddenly find themselves in a spot where bringing their former seventh-round gem back to Santa Clara feels less like nostalgia and more like necessity.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport stirred the pot Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show,” singling out Jennings as a receiver whose trade market should heat up over the coming days and weeks, and he pointed directly at San Francisco as a logical landing spot after Deebo Samuel went down with a hamstring injury expected to sideline him for a couple of weeks.

Coming on the heels of the Marvin Harrison Jr. trade, the comments sent a jolt through a 49ers fan base that never fully made peace with watching one of its most beloved competitors walk out the door.

The numbers in Minnesota explain why the Vikings might be willing to listen.

Jennings signed a one-year deal in May after a free agent market that turned out far cooler than expected, slotting in as the third option behind Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, yet he has managed just two catches for nine yards on five targets this season despite playing the bulk of the team’s offensive snaps.

The Vikings are 5-0 and winning largely on the strength of their defense, which leaves little urgency to force-feed a complementary receiver who simply hasn’t found his footing in Kevin O’Connell’s scheme.

Why the Reunion?

Jennings knows Kyle Shanahan’s offense as well as anyone who has ever played in it, and his game, built on physical routes over the middle, punishing blocks on the perimeter, and a knack for moving the chains that earned him the “Third and Jauan” nickname, was practically forged in that system.

Across five seasons with the 49ers, he totaled 210 receptions, 2,581 yards, and 22 touchdowns, highlighted by a 2024 breakout of 77 catches for 975 yards and a 2025 campaign in which he led the team with nine touchdown grabs while playing through a long list of injuries.

SI’s Grant Cohn reported last week that Jennings is available for the right price, and with the Vikings having handed him most of his money through a signing bonus, his remaining base salary is modest enough that a conditional mid-to-late-round pick could be all it takes to get a deal across the finish line.

There is also a fitting symmetry at play. San Francisco already welcomed back Samuel and Dre Greenlaw this offseason after each spent a year elsewhere, and a Jennings return would complete a reunion tour that has come to define this version of the roster.

The relationship wasn’t always smooth, as his 2025 contract standoff and trade request made clear, but time and a humbling stint in Minnesota have a way of softening those edges.

Nothing appears imminent, and the Vikings hold the leverage until the deadline draws closer.

Still with the receiver room battered and the stakes rising by the week, John Lynch picking up the phone would hardly be a surprise, and Jennings slipping back into the red and gold might end up being the most natural move of the entire trade season.
